ONEORVE: Redefining Enterprise with Purpose
A new chapter for ONEORVE PTE. LTD., where profitability sustains the enterprise, purpose guides it, and impact gives it meaning.
When ONEORVE first existed as an idea in 2023, the intention was never simply to build another technology company. I wanted to explore a different question: Can we build a commercially sustainable enterprise while using our knowledge, technology and resources to leave something meaningful behind?
That question has remained with me as ONEORVE evolved from an idea into ONEORVE PTE. LTD., incorporated in Singapore in 2025.
Today, we are taking another important step in that journey.
We are reshaping ONEORVE around a social-enterprise model, one that seeks to balance financial sustainability with purposeful and measurable social impact, responsible innovation and environmental stewardship.
This is not about abandoning business. Quite the opposite.
It is about becoming clearer about why we do business in the first place.
Profit and Purpose Do Not Have to Compete
There is sometimes an assumption that an organisation must choose between making money and doing good. I don't believe that choice is necessary.
A business needs revenue. It needs reserves. It needs to compensate people fairly, invest in technology, develop capabilities, survive difficult periods and create opportunities for growth. Without financial sustainability, even the best intentions eventually become difficult to sustain.
Singapore's social-enterprise framework reflects this balance. raiSE describes social enterprises as businesses that strategically integrate social impact into their business models while pursuing financial sustainability, a double bottom line of purposeful, measurable impact and viable enterprise.
That thinking resonates strongly with what ONEORVE is becoming.
Profit should not be the destination. It should be part of the engine that allows us to keep moving.
For ONEORVE, commercial success should enable us to strengthen our capabilities, invest in innovation, develop people, create opportunities, support meaningful programmes and build an organisation resilient enough to continue doing so.
Moving Impact Into the Core
Social impact should not be something we add to the end of the year when there happens to be money left over.
If ONEORVE is serious about becoming a social enterprise, impact must progressively become part of how we make decisions, design services, allocate resources and measure success.
raiSE's current Social Impact Framework expresses this through three principles: Intentionality, Additionality and Proportionality. In simple terms, impact should be deliberately built into the business, supported by actual systems and resources, and eventually measured relative to the scale of the enterprise.
For ONEORVE, this means looking beyond conventional measures of business performance.
We want to explore how our technology, professional expertise and resources can help expand opportunities, strengthen capabilities, improve livelihoods, support organisations that need access to expertise, encourage responsible technology use and contribute to a more sustainable future.
Some of this will take time.
We are not going to invent impressive impact numbers simply to look established. We would rather start small, measure honestly, learn from what works and progressively build an impact model that can stand up to scrutiny.
Still a Company. With a Broader Definition of Success.
ONEORVE will remain ONEORVE PTE. LTD.
Becoming purpose-driven does not require us to stop being a private company limited by shares. ACRA provides for private companies limited by shares as established Singapore corporate structures, while raiSE's social-enterprise framework is open to ACRA-registered businesses that meet the relevant impact and sustainability principles.
We will continue to undertake commercial activities, generate revenue, enter partnerships, innovate and grow.
What changes is the philosophy behind that growth.
Instead of asking only:
“How much can we make?”
we also want to ask:
“Who becomes better off because we exist?”
“What opportunities did we create?”
“What capabilities did we strengthen?”
“What impact did we leave behind?”
And perhaps most importantly:
“Are we building something worth passing on?”
Building Beyond Our Lifetime
This is the part of ONEORVE's transformation that matters deeply to me.
I do not want ONEORVE to become an organisation that exists only because its founder is still around.
Founders eventually have to step aside. Leadership changes. Shareholders change. Technology changes. Markets change. Even the problems society faces will change.
If an organisation's purpose disappears when one person leaves, then we have not really built an institution, we have built a dependency.
That is why the renewed ONEORVE is also being designed around stewardship, governance, succession and knowledge transfer.
Our Constitution is being developed to articulate the Company's purpose and governance principles. This is meaningful because ACRA recognises the company constitution as the document establishing the rules by which a company operates, including responsibilities and governance arrangements; alterations to a Singapore company's constitution require the appropriate special resolution and filing process.
But documents alone will never protect a purpose. People will.
We therefore need to develop future leaders who understand not only how to operate a business, but why ONEORVE exists. Knowledge must be documented. Responsibilities must gradually be transferred. People must be allowed to make decisions, learn from mistakes and eventually lead without depending on the founder for every answer.
To me, that is stewardship over ownership.
We may own shares in ONEORVE today, but what we are building should ultimately be greater than any one shareholder.
Creating Better Pathways
One area particularly important to ONEORVE will be livelihood and economic empowerment.
Not everyone begins life with the same opportunities, networks, education, resources or circumstances.
Sometimes what a person needs is not charity.
They need access.
Access to knowledge.
Access to skills.
Access to experience.
Access to mentorship.
Access to meaningful work.
Access to someone willing to give them an opportunity.
If we can help someone develop a capability that improves their earning potential, opens a career pathway, enables entrepreneurship or strengthens their financial resilience, the effect can extend far beyond a single intervention.
Our aspiration is a simple progression:
Access → Skills → Opportunity → Livelihood → Resilience → Better Quality of Life
We will not solve every social problem, nor should we pretend that we can.
But we can work within the areas where our knowledge, technology and resources allow us to make a genuine contribution.
Singapore Roots. Global Outlook.
ONEORVE was built in Singapore, and Singapore will remain an important part of our identity.
But purpose does not have to stop at a geographical border.
Over time, if ONEORVE develops the financial strength, leadership capability, partnerships and organisational maturity required to operate responsibly elsewhere, we should be open to bringing our work beyond Singapore.
Not simply because international expansion sounds impressive.
But because there may be communities, organisations and people elsewhere whom our capabilities can genuinely benefit.
Our principle should remain:
Grow where we can contribute, not simply where we can grow.
This Is a Beginning, Not an Achievement
Calling ourselves purpose-driven is easy.
Building an organisation that consistently demonstrates that purpose is much harder.
The real test will come years from now: whether ONEORVE remains financially sustainable, whether our impact can be demonstrated, whether future leaders continue protecting its purpose, and whether the organisation becomes stronger without being permanently dependent on those who started it.
Singapore's social-enterprise ecosystem itself recognises this as a journey, with raiSE distinguishing aspiring enterprises building intentionality from emerging and established social enterprises demonstrating increasingly sustained and measurable impact.
That is the spirit in which I see ONEORVE's transformation.
We are not declaring that we have reached the destination.
We are choosing the direction.
And from here, every service we develop, every person we mentor, every partnership we form, every dollar we reinvest and every future leader we prepare should move us a little closer towards it.
ONEORVE began with an idea.
Now we have an opportunity to build that idea into an institution, one capable of creating commercial value without losing its humanity, embracing technology without forgetting the people it should serve, and pursuing progress without leaving responsibility behind.
Perhaps decades from now, the people leading ONEORVE will have never met those of us who started it.
If they can still understand its purpose, improve upon what we built, and use it to create opportunities and meaningful impact for another generation, then we will have accomplished something far more valuable than simply building a successful company.
We will have built something worth continuing.
