When You Become the Product: Rethinking Social Media

For more than a decade, social media has changed the way we communicate, discover information and stay connected. It has helped us reconnect with old friends, build communities across borders and give everyone a voice.

But somewhere along the way, something changed.

Social media stopped being just about connecting people. It became a business built around our attention, our behaviour and our data.

And perhaps it is time to ask a simple question:

What if social media was built for people first, rather than profit first?

The business behind the feed

Most mainstream social platforms are free to use. But "free" does not necessarily mean there is no cost.

The business model often depends on understanding users, what we click, watch, search for, like, share, follow and how long we remain on the platform.

The more a platform understands about us, the better it can predict what might keep us engaged.

That can create an endless cycle:

We use the platform → the platform learns about us → our behaviour is analysed → our feed is personalised → we stay longer → more data is generated → more value is created for the platform.

Advertising and commercial interests then become a significant part of that ecosystem.

There is nothing inherently wrong with a business making money. Companies need sustainable business models.

The question is:

Should our personal information and attention be the primary currency used to generate that profit?

When algorithms decide what we see

Social media algorithms can be useful. They help us discover relevant content from billions of posts.

But there is a trade-off.

The content we see is increasingly influenced by systems designed to maximise engagement. What gets our attention may not necessarily be what is most meaningful, accurate or beneficial to us.

A controversial post may generate more engagement than a thoughtful one.

A sensational video may keep us watching longer than an educational one.

And eventually, our social experience can become less about what we want to see and more about what the platform believes will keep us there.

That creates a very different relationship between the user and the platform.

We think we are using social media.

But sometimes, social media is also using us.

What happens to privacy?

The issue isn't simply whether someone has "something to hide."

Privacy is about having control.

Control over what we share.

Control over who sees it.

Control over how our information is used.

Control over how much of our behaviour is monitored and analysed.

Most of us probably don't think twice about clicking "Like", watching a video or following an account.

But collectively, these tiny actions can reveal a surprisingly detailed picture of who we are, what interests us, what influences us and what captures our attention.

The question is not whether technology can collect this information.

It can.

The question is whether it should and whether users should have meaningful choices about it.

So, why ETHORVE?

ETHORVE was created from a simple idea:

What if we built a social community where people come before profiles, and genuine connections matter more than engagement?

ETHORVE is powered by ONEORVE and is currently being developed as a social experiment.

It isn't intended to be another platform competing to capture as much of your attention as possible.

Instead, the idea is to explore whether we can create a different kind of social environment, one centred around:

Real People

We want to encourage genuine human participation and reduce fake accounts, bots, scams and artificial engagement.

Real Connections

Social media should help us connect with people, not simply generate numbers, likes and followers.

Privacy

Your personal information should be treated with respect. ETHORVE's philosophy is that your data should not become the product simply because you want to participate in a community.

A Community Without Borders

People should be able to connect across countries, cultures, languages and backgrounds.

ETHORVE isn't about being anti-technology

Technology isn't the problem.

In fact, technology is what makes ETHORVE possible.

The question is how we choose to use it.

We can build technology that maximises engagement.

Or we can build technology that facilitates meaningful interaction.

We can build systems that treat people primarily as data points.

Or we can build systems that recognise people as people.

ETHORVE is an attempt to explore the latter.

A social experiment

ETHORVE is still young.

There are no guarantees that it will become the next big social platform and that isn't the objective.

The objective is to try something different.

Start small.

Invite real people.

Build genuine communities.

Listen to users.

Learn from what works and what doesn't.

And allow the platform to grow organically rather than chasing millions of users from day one.

Perhaps the most interesting part of this experiment isn't the technology.

It's the people who choose to participate.

What if we did social media differently?

Imagine joining a social platform without constantly wondering:

  • Who is tracking me?
  • Why am I seeing this?
  • Why is this advertisement following me?
  • Why does the algorithm keep showing me this?
  • Who is making money from my behaviour?
  • Is the person behind this account even real?

Imagine instead:

I know who I'm connecting with.
I understand why I'm seeing something.
My privacy matters.
My data isn't simply another commodity.
And the platform exists to facilitate my connections, not to own them.

That is the idea behind ETHORVE.

It may not be perfect.

It may take time.

It may evolve considerably along the way.

But every meaningful change starts with someone asking:

"Could we do this differently?"

ETHORVE is our attempt to find out.

ETHORVE

Real People. Real Connections. A Community Without Borders.

Built on trust. Driven by humanity. Created for people, not profiles.

If you're tired of being treated as a product and want to explore a different kind of social community, come and be part of the experiment.

Start small. Connect genuinely. Build something better, together.
